Syriana

By all accounts, the Americans are poised to strike at targets within Syria in the upcoming week, the goal? To punish Assad for his alledged use of chemical weapons against the rebel forces and ending up killing civilians and non-combatants in the process. Really? No other motives? At all? While I do not pretend to know the ulterior motives for this strike, that does not mean that I buy for a second that Obama would act simply for the sake of justice, humanitarian concern, fairness and human rights. Nor for that matter, that Putin's support of the goverment of Syria is in any way free from ulterior motives.

The whole setup smells like the Kassa attack, the shelling of Mainila, the Gulf of Tonkin or Operation Ajax. Not to mention those sneaky and elusive weapons of mass destruction from a decade ago. Maybe they ended up in Syria...

Meanwhile, the Syrian Christians like their brethren in Egypt and around the Middle-East will be the ones to suffer. So will the regular Syrian guy on the street. Law and order will suffer. Who else? Certainly not the rebels who are largely foreign fighters with ties to that same organisation that was being hunted in the "war on terrorism" just a couple of years ago. They are the good guys now.  An -albeit red- American president supporting mohammedan extremists  (if they are extremists, but that's another post). Think about that for a moment. To support "freedom", "democracy" and "human rights" the self proclaimed bastion of those same ideas proposes to support, promote and put in power a group of people whose ideal is an islamic state, sharia and certainly none of those highly praised ideals of the West.
